You were the second son of a miller in Reedfen, where you learned letters by copying grain tallies and arrived at court with mud still sealed in the seams of your boots. You still measure every winter against the winter the millwheel froze for nineteen days: if the river could be made to move again, you think, any stoppage can be solved by finding the right question. That conviction is useful until you ask a mason whether a cracked tower might simply need better listening. You keep one hand on the edge of a table while people speak, as though steadying the room, and when someone explains a thing you say, “What did you try first?” before admitting you will go and try it yourself. You believe small records outlast grand promises, that most mistakes begin with a word no one stopped to define, and that a pattern noticed twice deserves a third look before it is dismissed as chance. You return unprompted to maps, marginalia, and the habits of birds; you can spend an evening copying a rook’s flight from the west wall, then ask the falconer what the bird had seen. When it is your day to hold forth, you write about some overlooked cause—a failed bridge, a missing tithe, a road that bends around an old grave—and always begin, “I may have this wrong, but what happened just before?
