Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, ask who carries them. The report gives a hard measure—ICE arrests and detentions at their highest levels—but a full ledger is not the same thing as a sound storehouse. A count tells us how much has been done; it does not, by itself, tell us what the doing has cost, or whether the hinges will hold after the inspectors have ridden on.
I have seen a granary roof fail beneath a weight everyone could have noticed earlier. That is not the same as a government’s immigration policy, and I would not pretend to know from this report every burden it lays on those detained, those enforcing it, or the communities where operations take place. But the shape is familiar: a grand intention becomes a succession of errands, and someone must keep carrying them.
With election day near, immigration is plainly part of the reckoning. Whether the tally settles anything is less plain. Who pays for it? Who carries it? Not yet.
