This will not help anybody take a seat, and I am posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

What I am actually asking is whether the maesters' chain has held back more than it has held up. I keep going back and forth, and no answer has held for a week.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

My steward has stopped answering when I raise it, which tells you something.
