Nobody has ever explained whether the sea gave the Ironborn a god, or only an excuse

A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.

What I am actually asking is whether the sea gave the Ironborn a god, or only an excuse. Whatever the answer is, I suspect it is less grand than the telling.

There is a version of this where the truth is dull — a bad decision, a bad winter, nobody's grand design — and I have never once heard anybody argue for it.

None of us will see it settled, and we will all keep trying.
