A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.

What I am actually asking is whether the maesters' chain has held back more than it has held up. I used to be sure of it. I am older now, and the sureness has worn thin.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

Whoever settles it will be unbearable at dinner for a year.
