I should like to know why the Vale has never been taken

A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: why the Vale has never been taken. The songs flatter one answer, and I distrust whatever the songs flatter.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.

That is all I have, and it took me years to gather.
