A question for the board: what the Faceless Men are really for

Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is what the Faceless Men are really for. I have changed my mind on this twice, which is more than most will admit to.

The part nobody accounts for is time. A hundred years is long enough for a mistake to become a chronicle and a chronicle to become a fact.

Anyone who is certain about this has not thought about it long enough.
