A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.

The question, put plainly: what the Three-Eyed Crow wanted with a broken boy. My maester has a theory. My maester has fourteen theories.

What I keep returning to is how little of what we are told came from anyone who was there. It is all copies of copies, and each copy had a lord paying for the ink.

Anyone who is certain about this has not thought about it long enough.
