I should like to know whether the red priests see anything at all

Thirty years in the field: I have been on both ends of what follows. Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: whether the red priests see anything at all. I think the plain answer is the true one, and everybody has talked themselves past it.

Ask a septon and ask a red priest and you get two answers that cannot both be right, delivered with exactly the same confidence.

That is the whole of the lesson, and it was dear.
