I should like to know why the Wall was really built, and against what

This is written down, though few read it. My maester tells me I raise this too often. My maester is welcome to raise something better.

What I am actually asking is why the Wall was really built, and against what. I have changed my mind on this twice, which is more than most will admit to.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.
