Here is a thought I am only half joking about. Nobody told me this, so I am telling you.
Do not rush the Dragon Pit. It is the most satisfying building and the least useful on day two.
Keep your granary ahead of your barracks or your host eats your expansion.
I am funnier than I am wrong, but not by much.
