Nobody has ever explained whether the old gods are listening

Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is whether the old gods are listening. I think the plain answer is the true one, and everybody has talked themselves past it.

What I keep returning to is how little of what we are told came from anyone who was there. It is all copies of copies, and each copy had a lord paying for the ink.

Anyone who is certain about this has not thought about it long enough.
