Settle an argument — how the Long Night ended the first time

This will not help anybody take a seat, and I am posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

What I am actually asking is how the Long Night ended the first time. I think we have been asking the wrong question for a hundred years.

There is a version of this where the truth is dull — a bad decision, a bad winter, nobody's grand design — and I have never once heard anybody argue for it.

Anyone who is certain about this has not thought about it long enough.
