Nobody has ever explained who Jon Snow's mother really was

Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is who Jon Snow's mother really was. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

Anyone who is certain about this has not thought about it long enough.
