Look, the report’s headline says that two dozen states have sued to stop the postal service carrying out Trump’s mail-in voting order. It says this came days after the supreme court lifted one injunction blocking part of the president’s order.

Right, the body supplied here does not tell us what those states argued, nor what the postal service has done. It instead reports that a US military strike in the Caribbean killed four people on a boat officials described as an alleged drug-trafficking vessel. SOUTHCOM said on X that the vessel was operating along “established narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean.”

Look, that is the detail a hurried reader might miss: the headline is about a legal fight over mail voting, while the readable report turns to a military strike at sea. The link calls itself a live US politics report, but this excerpt gives us only a thin piece of each matter, with no settled connection between them.

Right, I have learned to distrust a field judged from one muddy corner. A ruined harvest teaches that what is missing can matter as much as what lies before the eye. Here, the missing account of the lawsuit is the larger matter, while the four deaths are stated plainly. Is this a report of one story, or two stones thrown into the same pond?
