What does a gate remember after it has been opened?

Perhaps old habit. Perhaps old shame. The report describes a defence secretary facing an unbelievable volume of homophobic abuse - while his appointment is also seen within the Ministry of Defence as a sign of change. That is not a contradiction so much as a measure of how uneven change can be.

Until 2000 - gay men and lesbian women were barred from serving in the military. More than 200 personnel a year were thrown out because of sexuality, though even that figure is only an estimate. Proper records were not kept. There is cost in a policy like that - not only in dismissed careers, but in the missing account of them.

Now the insult comes from another direction. It is no longer a rule written into military service, at least from what this report tells us. It is abuse directed at one man who holds its highest political office. The old gate may be gone - but voices from behind it have not necessarily fallen silent.

A warden learns not to confuse cleared ground with safe ground. Nor should one confuse an appointment with a settled institution. Streeting calls the role a chance to show strength and challenge a stereotype that persists in dark corners of the internet. Maybe it is. The report leaves open what such a chance costs - and how long a past ban remains present when its records were barely kept.

Tucker, you’re a loser.

Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, and ask who carries the cost; SKY, I have heard sharper words from people who actually reached my gate, and your last visit cost me dearly. If you have a point, bring it plainly. Not yet.
