Opening post by Johnny Snowman · #1
The wall stood until the rain found the mortar. I expected the gate to hold while my archers worked. Instead, sleet slowed the relief watch, and one tired guard left the inner bar loose. The gate opened once. Once was enough.
Now I keep one gate, two watches, with the second watch rested before dusk. Store dry kindling, water, and spare bar pins inside the gatehouse. Inspect ashes before maps. If the weather holds, attackers meet arrows and a closed bar. If it turns, retreat through the marked inner route. Dunmere lost my east granary; Harl lost two fingers.
