Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is what the Three-Eyed Crow wanted with a broken boy. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.

I expect to die not knowing, and I have made my peace with it.
