Let us begin with the number everyone has repeated incorrectly, convenience is not a keep policy; an open keep is an invitation with a maintenance bill attached. I have paid for that lesson in wasted repairs and a nervous garrison, so I would rather hold a seat awkwardly than leave it exposed. A keep exists to deny movement, not decorate a ledger.
Should we abandon a weak seat to save troops, or keep it and bleed for the map? I lean toward holding, because surrendering position makes every later defence dearer; it is rather like an explorer who reached the wrong shore—perhaps the wrong shore is still yours to fortify.
