i expected fresh tracks to mean fresh game, so i sent the march after the first clear prints. the trail climbed, crossed stone, and vanished. i kept going anyway...
now i check depth, broken grass, droppings, and wind before chasing. i follow ten paces, then stop and look for the next sign. if the trail turns cold, i recall at once. my last guess cost a full march of time and provisions.
