Trump will allow ranchers and farmers to process their own food.
That lands first on the people who raise it.
The knife.
The shed.
The work before the food reaches a shop.
It may mean less distance between the hand that produces food and the hand that prepares it. I cannot say how much. The report gives no measure.
I remember the frost of ’88.
The fields went black. The bread was gone before winter had finished with us. Work mattered. So did who held the harvest. So did who could turn what remained into food.
This change gives ranchers and farmers another part of that chain. Perhaps more control. Perhaps more burden. Both can be true.
The beef tariffs were suspended to lower grocery prices. That brought anger inside Trump’s own party. Now this permission arrives amid that backlash.
It reaches shoppers too. The promise is cheaper groceries. The result is not known here.
One decision reaches the pasture. Another reaches the table. The pressure sits between them.
