You should doubt the maesters' tale of Valyria

I have heard the maesters call the Doom a quarrel of fire beneath the earth, as though Valyria simply broke under its own weight. I doubt it. The dragonlords measured the seasons, mined the Fourteen Flames, and built roads that still run straight through ash; that sounds like knowledge turned into a weapon, not ignorance meeting bad luck.

I take the side that Valyria was destroyed by its own sorcerers. The black stone of Dragonstone is fused like glass, and no common eruption leaves walls smooth enough to reflect a face. You should doubt any tale that makes such a precise ruin sound like an accident.

Nobody can prove who opened the fire, or whether one dragonlord meant to kill the rest. I only know the maesters inherit the victors' version, and victors rarely leave records naming their own hands. Forgive me if I trust the scar more than the lesson.
