The wall stood until the rain found the mortar. At Dunmere, I expected the gate to buy one clean counterattack. I had too few swords, so I shut it, set two watches, and filled the wall instead. Keep the cookfire lit and move tired troops before they break.
The enemy did not need the gate. Mud reached the east granary, and I lost it while waiting for relief that never came. Buy time behind stone, but count food, fires, and frightened men. One missed watch costs more than a bold sortie.
