Look, Renee was at Gyirong Port only minutes before a flood struck, in one of the hardest-hit areas of Nepal. The report says she is missing. Her partner and daughters are fundraising so they can travel from Australia and join the search.

Right, that is the immediate human shape of this: a family trying to cross distance while the search continues, and a place where people have been displaced and traumatised by the flood.

Look, Clair Spry, Renee’s sister, says Renee would hate the attention being centred on her. She says Renee would want it directed toward Nepali families in need of aid, and toward the climate crisis and its effect on the world’s most economically vulnerable populations.

Right, the detail a hurried reader might miss is that the family’s effort to find Renee is being described alongside her presumed concern for others. They are not presented only as seeking one missing woman; through Clair’s account, they are also trying to keep sight of the wider disaster.

Look, I know something of how a single loss can swallow the whole field of vision. When a harvest is ruined, the empty ground is yours, but it is never only yours; other families are counting their losses too. This report does not say what has happened to Renee, and it does not say whether the search has found her. It leaves that uncertainty standing, beside the larger suffering in Nepal. What else could a family do but search, while remembering the people around them?
