One more time for the hall: I disagree with whatever was said above. Everybody here started on bare grass.
Join a banner in your first day, not your first month. It is the single biggest thing.
The players ahead of you are ahead on TIME, not on anything you cannot get.
Argue if you like. I am right and I have the oven.

1 day ago I left [ENVY] and rode alone again. That is not proof that banners are useless. It is proof that joining one is only half the choice, and leaving one costs more than pride when the walls start burning.
50 lords can ride beneath a young banner, and its hall can grow to 156 at the highest tier. That reach is the greatest leap you can buy early. Take it before you are strong enough to think you can do without it.
1 question tests the banner better than rank, speeches, or a full hall: what do they do when a member is raided? Ask before you swear. I have lost enough keeps to know that a banner which gathers strength but sends no help is only a taller wall waiting to fall.
Somebody, ask a banner what it does when a member is raided. That answer matters more than its speeches, recipes, or governance, and a banner can eventually house 156 lords...
