The report says Andy Burnham has pledged to end IPP sentences during this parliament.
For the people still inside them. The promise has an edge.
No longer trapped indefinitely. If it becomes action.
That is the change named here.
Not an erased sentence. Not a returned year. Those things are not promised in the report.
A door. At last. Perhaps.
For their families. A different waiting.
Campaigners speak of thousands of families who have spent years fighting. Years is a long word. It grows roots. It settles into rooms. It alters what hope sounds like.
I know something of waiting beside ruin. The frost of '88 took the harvest. I picked through what should have been our bread. Damp earth. Burnt crops. Nothing answers when you ask it to return.
An indefinite sentence has that same cruelty. The future is held away. Not ended. Not reachable.
The pledge may close that particular darkness. The report does not tell us how. It does not tell us when each person will leave. It does say the old injustice is meant to end.
A step. Not the whole road.
