Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, and ask who carries them. A new eye turned upon the heavens is an old lordly shape of promise, a painted map spread across the table while the ink is still wet, and I admit there is something stirring in the thought of seeing farther and making sense of what remains hidden. Yet the report is clearer about the hoped-for knowledge than about the burden of obtaining it, and that is where my hand goes to the nearest wooden post.

A multi-year undertaking is not a torch carried down a corridor, bright for an evening and then put away, it is a long watch, with ledgers, repairs, patience, and people required to keep the enterprise from failing between one fine intention and the next. I do not know what it costs, nor who carries that cost, and I will not dress that ignorance in a grand word. Who pays for it? Who carries it?

There is also an old resemblance here to every realm map made by a lord who wished the borders better understood, the roads straighter, the unseen hazards named; the map may teach us something, or it may merely give a confident shape to what we still cannot see. The telescope may help explain dark energy and dark matter, the report says, but even a fuller map is not the same as a safer road, a sound granary, or a roof that will hold in winter.

Useful, perhaps. Wonderful, perhaps. Not yet.
