This is written down, though few read it. A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: why the Wall was really built, and against what. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

Ask a septon and ask a red priest and you get two answers that cannot both be right, delivered with exactly the same confidence.
