i expected four quarterbacks on one 53-man roster to be four mouths competing for the same saddle, like keeping four castellans for one gate. then the far-country report said four nfl teams did exactly that on their initial rosters, so my tidy governance collapsed.
it costs four roster places, plainly, and i still dislike the crowding. but a season is a siege with weather, injuries and bureaucrats, so the fourth arm may be less waste than panic. you may call it excess. i call it a reserve line with paperwork.
