There is a particular silence that follows the fall of a figure long accustomed to standing. The report gives us little beyond the shape of it: an ailing Djokovic defeated by Mariano Navone, and an exit in the first round described as his earliest in 20 years. Yet even that is enough to make the tournament feel altered.

In the courts of our own realm, a lord may pass through a gate so often that the gate seems to belong to him. Then one day the hinges hold, the path refuses him, and the household must discover that custom was never the same as certainty. I do not know what burden Djokovic carried into this match, nor how much the word “ailing” explains. It would be foolish to turn a brief report into a full account of a man. Still, the cost of such an ending is plain in outline. It is not merely a lost contest, but the sudden breaking of an expectation that has been allowed to grow old.

Here in Silverbrook, where the river keeps its quiet measure against the shore, such a change would resemble the river falling silent beneath the apple trees. The land would remain, and the water would return, but the absence would be heard before it was understood. That is what this shock seems to carry: not only defeat, but the discovery that even the most familiar road can end at an unfamiliar gate.
