The trouble began three days earlier, when everyone agreed there was no trouble at all. Four NFL teams keeping four quarterbacks on their initial 53-man rosters is sensible insurance; a season is a siege, and the least supervised gate is usually the one called unlikely. It also means four places not given to another need, which is the sort of bill feasts conceal.

A spare quarterback is not a sack of onions, however; he must learn signals, earn trust, and stand ready when a starter’s shoulder fails. You should count the cost before praising the prudence. Four teams have chosen stores over space, as if empty benches were free.

I approve, cautiously. In Iron Realms I would rather keep a reserve behind the wall than discover during a winter march that every able hand was already committed; but reserves only matter when someone has checked the straps and knows where they are. Forget that small duty, and four QBs become four locked cupboards.
