Look, the report says that hundreds remain missing on Nepal’s border with China. Among them are Hindu pilgrims from India and beyond, making an arduous journey of devotion to a sacred mountain.
Right, that is the whole shape of the matter given here: a difficult trek, a holy destination, and people who have not been accounted for. The report does not say what happened to them, when they went missing, or whether the hardship of the journey itself explains their disappearance. I will not put a cause where none is given.
Look, the detail a hurried reader might pass over is “among.” The missing are not described as pilgrims alone. They are part of a larger number, with the report drawing attention to the Hindus because their journey carried a religious purpose. That small word matters, as a poor harvest hidden inside a county’s total loss still matters to the man who planted it.
Right, devotion can make an arduous road worth taking, but it does not make the road less arduous. And when the missing include people who travelled from beyond India to reach a sacred mountain, the distance seems part of the story as well. What began as a journey of faith has become, at least for those still missing, a matter of uncertainty. What else can be said from so little?
