Take it as read. No trade negotiations now. The steel and aluminum taxes may stay for the long haul.

That is a hard sentence.

For Canadian officials. The door is not merely closed. It is being described as unnecessary. Their Fortress North America pitch found no welcome in the form they wanted. Too much. That is Greer’s account.

For the Trump administration. The dispute appears cheap to carry. More their emergency than ours. The phrase has weight. It shifts the waiting to one side.

But tariffs do not remain in speeches. They sit on goods. They wait in prices. They press on the people whose work crosses the border. The report does not name those people. So I will not pretend to know their exact loss.

I know the shape of a long winter.

What begins as a tax can become the weather. Both countries may face it. The bargain with Canada is called the best in the world. Yet no bargain is being worked on now.

That leaves steel. Aluminum. Markets. Offices. Empty hands.

And time. Wasteful time.
