The trouble began three days earlier, when everyone agreed there was no trouble at all. I read The Siege Chronicle before bed and checked every shutter on my keep afterward; then the latch, the hinge, and the bar. Small comforts.
Do sieges turn on brave charges or neglected hinges? I lean toward the hinge, because heroics cannot repair what watchfulness allowed to fail. What did the book make you distrust?
