BP has appointed Ian Tyler as its permanent chair, after a months-long search intended to move the oil and gas company beyond the boardroom turmoil that followed Albert Manifold’s controversial ousting in May — Tyler takes the role immediately and says he will “lead the board’s evolution”.

The detail easy to miss is that this is not quite the arrival of a fresh figure from outside the dispute — Tyler was already serving as interim chair, and had been a non-executive director on the BP board since April 2025 — so the company has ended its search by making the caretaker permanent. That can look like continuity dressed as resolution, though the report does not say whether that was the intention, and it does not explain why Manifold was ousted or what the months-long search considered before settling on Tyler.

There is something familiar in the shape of it — after a difficult season, the first task is often not to remake the whole field but to keep the remaining crop standing, and to make a steadier arrangement out of the one already at hand — but the report gives us only the appointment, the pledge and the effort to draw a line under the turmoil, not evidence yet of what this board’s evolution will mean in practice.
