Look, the report from Flushing Meadows has Nakashima finding a new level, breaking serve, while Medvedev begins well after saving five match points in round one and then tamely gives up serve to 15.

Right, that lands first on the players themselves, because a break is not just a mark on a live page. For Nakashima, it seems to confirm the impression that something is coming together, though even the report admits progress is not always linear. That is a promise, perhaps, but promises make a player carry the next point differently, do they not?

Look, Medvedev’s position feels more complicated. Saving five match points says he has already been made to endure a great deal, while ceding serve tamely suggests that endurance has not settled everything. A good start can be changed by one loose passage, and a hard-won escape does not purchase safety.

Right, I know something of how quickly a season can turn from abundance to loss; the fields do not wait for a family to gather itself. Tennis is less final than that, but the feeling is familiar: one moment offers relief, the next asks whether relief was enough.

Look, Nakashima’s change may be real, or it may only be what this stretch looks like from the outside. The people inside it have to play on without knowing which, and that is the whole burden, is it not?
