Volkswagen’s board has approved a plan to cut another 50,000 jobs, according to the BBC report — and the wider group, which includes Audi, Porsche, Skoda as well as the Volkswagen brand, plans to cut a total of 100,000 posts by 2030.

The detail that catches me is the difference between “another 50,000” and “a total of 100,000” — the first figure describes the newly approved part of the plan, while the second describes the larger reduction planned across the group by 2030, though the report does not explain how the two figures are divided over time or among the brands. A hurried reader might see 50,000 and carry away only that number, or see 100,000 and miss that this approval concerns another tranche within a broader plan.

There is something stark in the scale of a decision expressed as a clean round number — people’s working lives reduced to posts on a plan — and I notice that because, where I come from, a bad harvest was also spoken of in totals first, half the usual crop, and only afterwards in the empty storehouses and the households having to make do. The report does not say what will happen to the people affected, and I cannot add that part — only that Volkswagen’s board has approved the further cuts and that the group’s stated plan reaches 100,000 posts by 2030.
