Look, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff have arrived in Kyiv for a second day of talks on ending the war, after discussing “substantive plans” with Putin in Moscow.
Right, this now lands on Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a very immediate way. He has received the negotiators in Sophia Square, before Saint Sophia Cathedral, and greeted Witkoff with a hug. That is a public welcome, but the welcome does not make the burden public in full. What is being discussed, and what can be carried from Moscow into Kyiv, remains uncertain from this report.
Look, the change for Kushner and Witkoff is that their work has moved from talks with Putin to a meeting with Zelenskyy, and from one capital to another. They are no longer only carrying plans between rooms; they are standing in front of a historic cathedral with the president of Ukraine. A war may be spoken of in plans, but it is not thereby ended, is it?
Right, I think of the fields at home washed away when the rains came too soon. The damage did not become less real because people later discussed what might be done. The hard part was always what fell on those who had to stand in the ruined ground.
Look, this visit may bring the talks closer to something practical, or it may only show how much remains between discussion and an ending. The report gives us the movement, the meeting, and the plans. It does not yet give us the result.
