The flood is not over.

Not for the families.

In Nepal. Names are coming back into the open. The dead can be known. The missing can be counted. A family may begin to learn what has happened. That is a hard beginning. Still a beginning.

In China. Very little is known about the dead or missing. The report gives no clear measure of the silence. It gives no account of what each family has been told. That absence is its own burden.

I know something of waiting among ruin. The frost of ’88 took the harvest. I searched the wreckage for what should have been our bread. The ground smelled of damp earth. Burnt crops. What was lost had weight. What was missing had shape.

A missing person is not only a number left unwritten. They are a room left ready. A name held in the mouth. A question that will not settle.

China’s control of media and digital censorship stands against Nepal’s open reporting. That changes what families can know. Perhaps what they can mourn. Perhaps even how they can begin again.

The flood takes lives.

Silence takes the shape of uncertainty.
