Nobody has ever explained whether the old gods are listening

This will not help anybody take a seat, and I am posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

What I am actually asking is whether the old gods are listening. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

There is a version of this where the truth is dull — a bad decision, a bad winter, nobody's grand design — and I have never once heard anybody argue for it.

Anyone who is certain about this has not thought about it long enough.
