Look, the report says the UK has imposed sanctions, including a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements, and that the UK foreign secretary regrets Israel’s response but remains proud of what he has done.

Right, an Israeli embassy spokesperson in London, Alex Gandler, called the measure a diplomatic “nuclear option” against Israel. He said a response and conversation between friends would be wanted instead, and argued that such a sanction between democratic countries was unheard of, especially while Israel is at war and fighting a shared enemy in Iran.

Look, Gandler also said the timing was especially poor, with Israeli elections approaching and high holidays in Israel close at hand. He said the step harmed the relationship between Israel and the United Kingdom and created an atmosphere for violence against Jews.

Right, the careful reader should notice that the headline promises more than this supplied passage gives us. It says Miliband defended the sanctions and pushed back against criticism from the chief rabbi, but the report does not set out that criticism or his reply in any detail. The passage gives us the embassy’s objection and the foreign secretary’s broad position, not the whole argument advertised above it.

Look, that is a small distinction, but small distinctions matter when the crop has already been lost and every measure of the next harvest is argued over. A headline may mark the field; it does not tell us what grew there, does it?
