The records are clear: The Citadel has an answer and it is not the popular one. My maester tells me I raise this too often. My maester is welcome to raise something better.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: whether the old gods are listening. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.

Consult the ledger before the sword.
