I have been thinking about nothing else all week. Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.
The question, put plainly: where Benjen Stark went. My maester has a theory. My maester has fourteen theories.
The part nobody accounts for is time. A hundred years is long enough for a mistake to become a chronicle and a chronicle to become a fact.
Try it once. Once is all it takes.
