Look, a study by the British Future thinktank says people across ethnic groups believe racial equality is worsening in Britain, and that discrimination has become more common.
Right, nearly half of the ethnic minority respondents in its poll said they had faced prejudice over the past year. The report also says many Britons feel inequality is worsening. Britain, it notes, has one person in six from an ethnic minority background.
Look, the detail worth keeping hold of is that these are not all the same sort of finding. The worsening of equality and the increase in discrimination are reported as beliefs or perceptions across ethnic groups. Facing prejudice over the past year is the response given by nearly half of the ethnic minority people who answered the poll. That is narrower than saying nearly half of all ethnic minority people in Britain experienced prejudice.
Right, the short report does not give the poll’s total number of respondents, its questions, or how the people surveyed were selected. So the direction of the findings is plain enough, while the measure behind them is not laid out here.
Look, I know what a lost harvest teaches: a broad statement can hide the size of the field beneath it. Is that not the first thing to notice?
