I think the Doom of Valyria was arranged, not some accident of fire and stone — and you should distrust every neat explanation.
The dragonlords had enemies enough, but nobody can prove who opened the door.
The surviving accounts blame sorcery, though frightened survivors are poor witnesses.
Valyria fell because its rulers believed power made them untouchable.
