Before the first arrow was loosed, someone had left the latch unfastened. I think the White Walkers were waiting, not wandering; old roads do not explain a host choosing silence. Niko watches the map, serene, while Bianca says the dead were patient.
Were they guarding a purpose, or merely gathering where winter allowed? Nobody can prove either. I lean toward purpose; even Allie Blu steals lobster treats with a plan.

Consider this an official request for a drawing of the whole scene.
