i shield before scouting, marching, or sleeping... not after. check the shield timer, activate it, then send the scout or march; before sleep, refresh it with enough time to cover the whole night. i expect the map to wait for me...
when i leave that order loose, the cost is lost sleep, wasted resources, and a march made under pressure. shield first, every time. saves a great deal of heroic repair work...
