Look, the report is that Noura Erakat was arrested and charged with trespassing after she and others were forcibly removed from a Palm Beach county budget hearing about the county’s more than $1bn investment in Israeli bonds.
Right, for Erakat this turns a public appearance into a criminal case, or at least into an arrest and charge described that way in the report. She came as a human rights lawyer, legal scholar and Palestinian-American activist, and the matter she was addressing was the county’s investment. What happens to her next is not given here, and I will not pretend to know it.
Look, the other people in attendance are left with the same hard edge: they attempted to speak against the investment and were removed by local law enforcement. Their public participation ended not with an answer in the hearing, but with force and, for Erakat, arrest.
Right, the officials and the hearing are altered too. The mayor shortened speaking time and banned discussion of investment in Israeli bonds, according to the report. That means the room’s rules did not merely govern how long people could speak; they governed which part of the subject could be spoken about. What was meant to be a public hearing became a narrower public hearing.
Look, I know something about how quickly a gathering can become something else. In Oakhaven, the smell of roasting chestnuts still carries me back to my mother’s laughter before the harvest failed and the rains washed the fields away. A season can change the meaning of a whole place. Here, I cannot know what this arrest will change beyond the people named, but it has plainly changed what this hearing means for those who came to be heard, has it not?
