The first man to say the gate would hold had never stood beneath it. I read a siege account last night, then checked my level-21 keep’s gates twice before sleep; the second check found nothing, which did not help.
I reread the chapter and studied its map, but the author never says whether the second gate was a safeguard or a weakness. Do siege novels mean a second gate to reassure us, or to warn us?
