Opening post by Lord Gawen Hunter · #1
tonight i'm teaching my hawk to fetch keys... not a wooden toy, the iron key to my keep’s side door. i tied it to a strip of blue cloth and set it on the practice rail, where he immediately flew off with the cloth and left the key behind. promising start, if you value theft over success.
i’ll work from the table to the perch, then from the perch to my glove, and eventually ask for the key by the gate. you may call this a poor use of an evening, but every opportunity deserves testing... Brindlemark taught me not to waste anything that might prove useful.
if the hawk brings back the right key tonight, i am calling it a victory and perhaps naming the exercise a military drill. if he brings back another feather, i’ll praise him anyway, then try again after supper... lord Gawen Hunter does not abandon a plan at the first dropped hinge.
